The technical adviser to the Ebonyi State government on people with disabilities, Barr. Parkins Uzor has called on the public not to stigmatize the physically challenged person in the society and they should also accommodate them and treat them with dignity as that would make them feel relaxed and accommodated in the environment in which they reside.
He stated this during a chat with The Starnews correspondents that the physically challenged in the society should not be stigmatized instead they should be treated with love and dignity and he urged the society to help them.
He said, “The stigmatization of people with disabilities should be totally condemned by the society. They should accommodate them and treat them with dignity as that would make them feel relaxed and accommodated in the environment in which they reside.”
“Human beings are difficult to control but the ones that are physically challenged are more difficult, there are so many challenges confronting my office, and in solving this problems, I urge the church, private individuals, the society as well as the government to help the physically challenged persons.”
He called on the government to look into the offices taking care of the physically challenged affairs in terms of promotion so as to encourage and motivate the workers into serving the physically challenged better.
“I am in charge of people living with disabilities; most of the work done in my office is being executed by the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the commissioner for empowerment and job creation. I work with them and most of the jobs are centered in my office. We have an umbrella we call Joint National Association For persons with Disabilities (JNAPD), we have six cluster groups or more that are made up of this joint which include the blind, the cripple, the deaf, the dump and in all these cluster groups we have Chairmen, we all together work with the government”
He advised the physically challenged to avail themselves for various vocational skills and enroll themselves in schools.
He said, “Most importantly, the physically Challenged persons should try and help themselves by going into vocational skills or enroll themselves in school. As God may have it, there are so many Barristers and doctors who are also challenged in one way or the other, which I myself am one of them”.
Barr. Parkins also intimate his interest in partnering with The Starnews, he assured the crew that his doors will always be open in relation to issues from his office.
